birth of venus by sheila janet
its the last day of june, my favorite month of the year - the month of the solstice, my birth, freedom and many other things. this has been a particularly revelatory 30 days for many of us and our communities—there’s been a lot of unrest, transition, exploration, celebration, and oddly enough some people just found out black folks exist. today i’m offering this picture of black venus de milo, representing rebirth, passion, and beauty, and this song — her arrival by christian scott atunde adjua from one of my favorite albums last year, ancestral recall. you cant tell me this song doesn’t move you and make you envision a radiant black person emerging into life and exploring a new world for the first time.
